Career Development

Prahran Rhythmic Gymnastics (PRG) is committed to supporting our gymnasts develop their long term careers in the sport of rhythmic gymnastics and, as such, offers specific pathways to encourage them to pursue careers in coaching, judging or club administration.

Coaching

If a gymnast wishes to develop her coaching skills, in the first instance an approach should be made to her coach or to the head coach. If the coach is satisfied of the gymnast’s suitability, then arrangements will be made for one of the club’s accredited coaches to mentor her as a trainee coach. This will involve the gymnast learning from the coach through observation and practice.

This will be a minimum of 20 hours unpaid voluntary work. After this time, the gymnast can request a formal assessment from the coach. Once a satisfactory assessment has been achieved, then any hours worked will be remunerated as long as the gymnast has a minimum age of 14 years and 9 months.

A Working With Children Check will be required for anyone aged 18 and above. Meanwhile, the gymnast should complete the Australian Sports Commission’s (ASC) Beginning Coaching General Principles free online course. On completion, she should print out the certificate and pass to the coach.

Once the gymnast has a satisfactory assessment from the coach as well as a certificate to say that she has completed the online General Principles course, the gymnast can approach the head coach to request the committee for funding from the club to undertake the Level 1 RG Coaching Course.

If approved, this is to be completed as per Gymnastics Australia’s guidelines. Upon achieving Level 1 accreditation, PRG may offer paid employment on a casual basis.

Registration will be paid for all coaches employed by PRG on condition that the coach does not work for anyone else unless PRG has indicated that it does not require the services of the coach.

All coaches are responsible for ensuring that they accrue enough updating points each year in order to qualify for registration.

Judging

If a gymnast wishes to develop her skills as a judge then, in the first instance she should approach her coach or the head Coach.

If the coach is satisfied of the gymnast’s suitability, a recommendation will be made to the committee for funding for a beginners judging course.

Once a judging course has been completed, it is expected that the gymnast undertakes to practise her judging skills by attending a minimum of two (2) competitions within the year and to be rostered on as a judge on behalf of PRG.

For each year this condition is met, PRG will pay the registration fee on condition the gymnast does not act as a judge for any other club.

All judges are responsible for ensuring that they accrue enough updating points each year in order to qualify for registration.
